Leicestershire Round - 2008

Day two - Saturday March 22nd

"The round has become a well-used and popular path, that has distinctive signposts and way markers that clearly show the way ahead." (Leics County Council booklet - The Leicestershire Round)

What a fantastic place to stay, situated with its campsite adjoining the green-lane track of the old Fosseway, running for 1.5 miles before becoming a gravel track on the way to Sharnford. We had a good breakfast before preparing to start day two walk. The hosts' 6 year old daughter, Ellie gave Joseph a cream egg for Easter.
There were light snow showers as we walked but nothing like the 5 - 6 inches that the forecasters had been talking of.
Our walk took us through Fosse Meadows, through Sharnford and our second motorway crossing over the M69 near Aston Flamville and on through Burbage Common and woods.

We were quite sheltered from the strong winds and occasional snow flurries as we took the path through the woods and we enjoyed the contrasting signs of spring where Wood Anenomes and Wild Angelica grew in abundance. We took a short break in May's tearoom on the common, a tiny but delightful place to stop and chat with other walkers and stock up on some of the many sweet delights on offer there. An interesting section of the walk this one, a mixture of public areas such as Fosse Meadows and Burbage Common where dog walkers abound and more remote field areas which we had to ourselves.

We also walked through urban areas such as Barwell with a really curious section going through an industrial estate, past Windy Corner motorcycles where we paused awhile to admire the Triumph Bonnevilles. Beyond Barwell and we were into canal country heading for Sutton Wharf where I shouted to a passing narrowboat to ask the driver what speed he was going. "About 6mph" came the reply and Joseph and I took up the challenge and raced him much to the amusement of the boats passengers.

A short walk past historical Ambion Hill and woods and into Sutton Cheney where we spent a particularly pleasant evening in the Hercules pub before kindly being picked up by the host of our second nights accommodation.
