workshops & talks - happening:
Outlook Project - Market Harborough
Art workshops with
the Outlook Project for adults with learning difficulties at the Evangelical
Church, Market Harborough - Wednesdays 1.00 - 3.00, term times 2008.
This spring term we've been working on Shibori techniques in particular; a
Japanese technique of manipulating and resist-dyeing fabrics. During the coming
summer term we'll be looking at ways to enhance the work in preparation for
exhibiting.
Textiles Project
- Greenfield Primary School, Countesthorpe
Worked at Greenfield Primary School in Countesthorpe in early March in
a residency involving all year groups, teachers, parent volunteers and the wider
community. The school has a circular hall and we've made fabric lengths
to enhance the ceiling area. Younger children were involved in
Shibori (Japanese in origin) - a variety of methods involving tying, pleating
and folding fabric in order to not only resist-dye but also permanently alter
the physical structure of the fabric. We used two techniques in
particular: undyed - Mokúmé style (wood grain) - which involves concertinaing,
twisting and tying. Arashi (rain) is a method of pole dying where the fabric is
secured, tied and scrunched up. Another technique that we used was simple clump tying of small
stones. The fabric (polyester) was then heat-set off-site and dyed at the same
time where required. Some transfer printing was also involved, particularly
with yr6 who translated words from novels and poetry into visual
imagery for the fabric artworks.
Sheffield Children's Festival 2008 - The Silk
Road
Kimono
- Have now worked for one day at All
Saints Catholic School working with a group of Yr9's and 10's designing and
creating a mock silk Kimono. The group have been taught Batik techniques and the
second session is on Thursday 19th June. After this time the silk will be
finished off by myself and made into the finished Kimono which will go on
display at the Workstation, Paternoster Road, Sheffield as part of the 2008
exhibition celebrating the festival.
Prayer Flags - Working with yr 9's for two days at Tapton School and a mixed age
group at the Oakwood Hospital School designing and creating silk Batik prayer
flags using Chinese Kanji characters.
